Normally, it is okay for the nipple and areola to be part of the movement created by the suction of the pump. But for some who might have a higher level of elasticity, we want to use the sticky nature of silicone to grab on and hold on to the areola and even the sides of the nipple and not let that get pulled into the tunnel part of the flange. We are using the silicone as a tool to stop you from getting so much pulled in that it effects your ability to empty.
If you typically get pulled deep into the tunnel part of the hard plastic flanges you have tried, no matter how small, you would be what we consider elastic. If you follow the instructions and apply the silicone as designed and you still see movement of the areola please reach out and let us help you get to the bottom of what is happening.
Typically there is a residue of oil or lubricant either on the surface of the flange or in the pores of the skin and the lube keeps the silicone from doing its’ job. The flanges can be cleaned with Dawn Dish Detergent and the skin can we cleaned with witch hazel and a cloth.
